A Conversation with Caitlin Hunt (Brunell), Executive Director of the American Heart Association

Lauren

At just 15 years old, Caitlin Hunt (Brunell) started paving the way for a career dedicated to serving others. What began with her nonprofit, Caitlin’s Closet®, has evolved into a lifelong commitment to advocacy and impact. Now, as the Executive Director of the American Heart Association (AHA) in Jacksonville, Caitlin is leading the charge in heart health awareness, fundraising, and community engagement. We had the opportunity to sit down with her to discuss her journey, the importance of heart health, and what’s next in this exciting season of her life.

A Career with Purpose

Caitlin’s passion for community service started early. Through Caitlin’s Closet®, she provided young women with financial hardships the opportunity to dress confidently for prom and homecoming. That experience inspired her to pursue a Master of Nonprofit Management at The New School in NYC, setting the foundation for her career in the nonprofit sector.

After working abroad, Caitlin returned home to Jacksonville and joined the American Heart Association in 2021. Within a year, she stepped into the Executive Director role, leading a dedicated team focused on fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and initiatives that address health disparities. Her mission became even more personal as she watched family members, including her father, battle heart disease. This firsthand experience solidified her commitment to improving community health outcomes.

Heart Health: What You Need to Know

If there’s one thing Caitlin wishes more people knew, it’s that cardiovascular disease is the No.1 health threat for women—claiming more lives than all cancers combined. Yet, 80% of cases are preventable through self-advocacy, regular health screenings, and lifestyle choices. She encourages women to prioritize their health by knowing their numbers, staying active, and maintaining a heart-healthy diet.

“As women, we often put ourselves last on our to-do list—if we even make the list at all,” Caitlin says. “But prioritizing your health is always the right decision for yourself and the people you love.”

Making an Impact in Jacksonville

Under Caitlin’s leadership, the AHA raised nearly $4 million in the past year, implementing sustainable programs that address nutrition insecurity, hypertension, tobacco cessation, and emergency response. Their efforts have directly impacted over 190,000 residents.

One of the most rewarding moments? Hosting the 2024 Heart Ball Gala, which raised a record-breaking $2.2 million to support life-saving research and initiatives.

“The work we do wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our supporters,” she says. “Ensuring that every person has access to quality care and basic health needs is at the core of our mission.”

A New Chapter: Marriage & Motherhood

While Caitlin’s career is thriving, her personal life is equally full. She and her husband, Charlie, are celebrating their first year of marriage while eagerly preparing for the arrival of their first child.

“We decided to be surprised by the gender, so we’re counting down to that special moment of meeting Baby H,” Caitlin shares. “I’ve always dreamed of being a mom, and while I know parenthood comes with sacrifices, I feel like I’m stepping into something I was meant for.”

As she prepares for motherhood, she’s also learning the importance of rest and self-care—something she hopes other women will prioritize as well.

Final Thoughts

Caitlin Hunt (Brunell) is a force for change—whether she’s fighting for heart health, uplifting communities, or embracing the next chapter of her personal journey. Her story is a powerful reminder that purpose and passion can go hand in hand—and that when women prioritize their well-being, they create a ripple effect of impact for those around them.
