Michelle Lineberger - From Fashion Lover to Boutique Stylist

Lauren

Some people just have an eye for style, and Michelle Lineberger is one of those people. Her journey into fashion wasn’t exactly planned, but her love for clothing and helping people feel their best made her a natural fit for the role she has today.

As a stylist at one of Jacksonville’s most beloved boutiques, Michelle has built a reputation for making fashion feel approachable, fun, and totally doable—even for the busiest moms. We sat down with her to hear more about how she found her way into the boutique world, her go-to styling tips, and why shopping local means so much to her.

Tell us a bit about your journey to Penelope T — how did you go from customer to part of the team?

When Penelope T opened in 2011, I had lived in Jax for two years—and fun fact, I worked in the store that was formerly in their space! I instantly loved everything about Penelope T, from how nice all the girls were to how cool their selection was. I shopped there for any special occasion, and everyone knew to get me a gift card for my birthday.

By 2019, both of my kids were finally in school full-time, and Penelope T posted a part-time “steamer” position on Instagram. I jumped at the chance. I ran into Manne (the co-owner) and asked if she needed my resume, and she laughed. I started steaming clothes for a few hours a week, but I kept ending up on the sales floor to show customers how much I loved everything. It wasn’t long before I stepped away from steaming and joined the sales team as a stylist.

What do you love most about working at Penelope T, and how would you describe the boutique’s style?

What I love most is helping people feel their best and encouraging them to try things they wouldn’t normally go for. Fashion can be intimidating, but when you try something new that works, your confidence grows.

Penelope T’s style is just cool to me. We have pieces for everyone — I have regular customers in their 50s and 60s, as well as women in their 20s. Everyone feels a little cooler when they leave with a Penelope T bag.

As a stylist, my job is to help you style an entire outfit and give ideas on how to pair what you buy with what’s already in your closet. I’m like your personal hype girl, and when my coworkers join in, it’s a full-on pep rally.

We know you’ve got a great eye for fashion! What are your go-to styling tips? And any tips for busy moms who want to feel put-together without a lot of fuss?

Thank you! I’ve always loved fashion, but my style has evolved so much since working at Penelope T.

My biggest tip: Don’t be afraid! There are no rules. Wear what makes you feel good and fits your body. Stop stressing over size numbers — go with what feels right.

For busy moms, I recommend a cute lounge set. Perfect White Tee makes some great ones that don’t feel like pajamas. Also, invest in comfortable everyday jeans and a tee, and then add cool accessories like a necklace or sunglasses. Toss on a Clare V fanny pack, and everyone will be asking where you got your outfit.

What’s one trend you’re loving right now, and how can someone make it work in their everyday wardrobe?

I’m really into cute socks!

Del Campo makes comfy socks I wear with sneakers — they’re perfect for days when I’m in workout gear. I’ve also seen them styled with dressier shoes. Sock Candy makes adorable sheer socks that look great with loafers or fashion sneakers like my Autrys.

Another trend I love is barrel or horseshoe jeans. If you’re new to the trend, try the Half Pipe Ankle by Mother. For a bolder look, Agolde’s Luna jeans are great. Pair them with a bootie that fits inside the hem or some fun socks and loafers.

Penelope T is such a staple in the community. How does the boutique inspire you, and what makes shopping local feel so special to you?

From day one, shopping at Penelope T felt like hanging out with friends. Manne has a gift for hiring the nicest, most supportive people — the kind of women who make you feel welcome and never intimidated.

Helping people feel good about themselves is a gift. I’m always honest with my clients. If something doesn’t look right, I’ll tell them. Building that trust is important. When you buy something, I want you to love wearing it.

Working at a local boutique like Penelope T has connected me to so many people. Everywhere I go, I run into customers who have become friends. I’ve built real relationships, and nothing beats seeing someone at an event wearing an outfit we styled together — looking confident and happy. It’s the best part of the job.

Michelle’s journey is proof that style isn’t just about the clothes you wear—it’s about confidence, connection, and a little bit of fun along the way. Her passion for helping clients step out of their comfort zones and discover new looks is what makes her more than just a stylist; she’s a cheerleader, a trusted friend, and a source of inspiration for anyone who steps through the doors. Whether she’s pairing a statement sock with a perfect pair of jeans or building trust with clients, Michelle’s approach reminds us that fashion is about feeling good, trying new things, and—most importantly—being yourself.
